Problem: Your furnace will not ignite the gas to produce heat for your home. When a furnace has a bad ignitor what I see most of the time is the following sequence of operation: 

1. Thermostat calls for heat.

2. Draft inducer motor starts.

3. Pressure switch attached by a small plastic or rubber tube senses the negative pressure produced by the draft inducer and closes.

4. Draft inducer runs for 30 seconds to a minute before you hear a gas hissing sound. The ignitor did not glow, the flame sensor (a small metal probe about 1/8" in diameter, with a white porcelain base) does not sense the flame, so after 8 to 10 seconds the hissing sounds stops with no ignition of gas to heat your home. Your furnace shuts down and goes into a lock out condition until you turn your power switch back off and on again. 

Solution: Sorry, but you need to purchase and install a new ignitor.

The Ruud, Rheem Ignitor pictured below has a terminal connector "C."

The ignitor below is an exact OEM ignitor for Rheem and Ruud furnaces.  It is called the Protech and the part number is #62-22868-93. This ignitor replaces Rheem, Ruud part numbers #62-22868-82, #62-22441-01 & 62-22868-02. This ignitor does not replace the Rheem Drum furnace ignitor used in Rheem drum furnaces. This ignitor is the most popular brand for Rheem and Ruud.  Below is a picture of this Rheem and Ruud exact OEM replacement ignitor. This ignitor comes with installation instructions. We sell the ignitor mounting bracket below. It has a terminal connector "C." The terminal connector has Norton Model 201N stamped on the connector. Please note that all the ignitors we sell are factory tested and have some burning, discoloration on the filament. *For Your Information: When handling & installing ignitors never touch the gray glass part of the ignitor. Handle & install the ignitor using the white porcelain part of the ignitor. If you touch the gray glass, it could shorten the life of the ignitor. Ignitors are very fragile. If you drop it or hit it against something the ignitor will easily break. Please be careful.
