Having a problem with your humidifier?
Below are listed some procedures for troubleshooting humidifier water problems:
I see problems ever now and then with humidifiers where the water will not flow, or the water will not stop running, even when the humidifier is turned off. In many cases it could be a bad water solenoid valve. Check the following before condemning the water solenoid valve.
-
Test the two wires that go into the solenoid valve with a volt meter set to "Volts AC". With the humidistat calling for humidity, the blower running, and the gas burning you should be getting between 24 to 28 volts AC to the solenoid valve. Some valves are 110 volts so be careful not to get shocked.
-
Make sure the water saddle valve is not restricted by turning the saddle valve on. Loosen the compression nut slightly where the 1/4" copper tubing enters the saddle valve. If water comes out then your saddle valve is not clogged, and is OK. If there is no water coming out then you will need to replace your saddle valve.
-
Take the compression nut loose on the end of the solenoid valve that exits up to the water distribution tray (not the end where the water supply copper tube enters). After you take the tube off you should see a tiny plastic orifice up inside the tubing. Lots of time I see the orifice stopped up with lime deposits. The orifices are sold below. This will definitely cause the water to not flow in your humidifier. You can take a thin needle and reopen the hole or purchase another orifice to eliminate this problem.
-
If you water flow continuously and will not shut off when the blower stops you probably need a new water solenoid valve. You can check to see if it is the solenoid valve or an electrical malfunction problem by turning your furnace power off or unplug your humidifier. If the water continues to flow with the power off then you definitely need one of the valves listed below.
-
Tip: When replacing a solenoid valve with a new valve. This will prevent your new solenoid valve from getting stopped up with sediment. This is accomplished best by using two people. When replacing any solenoid valve, turn off the saddle valve (water valve). Disconnect the water line from the old valve. Hold the disconnected water line into a bucket. Second person, turn the saddle valve (water valve) back on full force to allow sediment and junk to flow into the bucket instead of stopping up the new valve. Install and connect the new solenoid valve.

Below we have the most common Aprilaire, Bryant, & Carrier parts & supplies
Aprilaire Model #4040 Water Solenoid Valve:
The Aprilaire Model 4040 Water Solenoid valve pictured below is the exact replacement valve for Aprilaire Humidifier Models: 220, 224, 400, 440, 550, 558 560, 568, 600, 700, 760 768. This valve is the replacement valve for Bryant Carrier part #4374
and 4357.
*Please note, this is a 24 volt valve. All 4040 valves come with a 4004 strainer installed in the inlet side of valve. Comes from the factory in a plastic bag.

The 4040 valve ships in a plastic bag with instructions:

Aprilaire Model 4005 Water Solenoid Valve:
The Aprilaire Model 4005 Water Solenoid valve pictured below is the exact replacement valve for Aprilaire Humidifier Models: 110 & 112:
Please note, this is a 120 volt valve:

Bryant Carrier Humidifier Water Solenoid Valve EF18LJ241:
The Water Solenoid Valve pictured below replaces many solenoid valves on Bryant humidifiers. The part number is EF18LJ241
Please note, this is a 24 volt DC valve used on many Bryant and Carrier Humidifiers. Bryant Carrier Humidifiers have a rectifier that changes the voltage from AC to DC volts. The rectifier is located in the plug, where the plug, plugs into the solenoid valve.
Please email us with your humidifier's model number if you want us to find
if this is the valve your Bryant, Carrier humidifier uses. Our email address
is: support@arnoldservice.com

Bryant Carrier Humidifier Rectifier Part #L1-03232
The L1-03232
Rectifier is used with the EF18LJ241 solenoid valve sold above to change 24
volts AC voltage to 24 volts DC voltage. You should already have this
rectifier installed on your humidifier if you have the EF18LJ241 valve and have
a Bryant Carrier humidifier. You can test by making sure the humidifier is on
and use a volt meter set to "Volts DC" You should be getting at least 24 volts
DC out of the rectifier plug.

Aprilaire Water Restrictor Orifices:
Below are pictured, with an opportunity for you to purchase the water restrictor orifices that are the problem many times when your humidifier is not getting water up to the water distribution tray. I would say 90% of the time this little orifice being stopped up is the reason for your humidifier not getting water up to the water distribution tray. There are four different colored restrictors depending on which model humidifier you own. Below is an exploded pictorial picture, part by part break down of how the water supply system looks on Aprilaire models 110, 220, 112, 224, 330, 350, 360, 440, 560, 760 and 550. You can see how small the orifices actually are. You can see how easily these things can become stopped up. We sell these in packs of 2.
*A note about UPS shipping: Sorry, but UPS does not figure ounces. If a part weighs 2 ounces, UPS considers it as weighing one pound. If the box and part weigh 1lb. 2 ounces, UPS considers it as weighing 2 lbs. You might want to add some other items so you can get your pound's worth! I am sorry about the shipping these orifices most certainly do not weigh a pound, but that is what I am charged.

Aprilaire RP4004 Water Line Strainer
Another problem that could cause water not to flow in your humidifier would be the water line filter strainer stopped up. The water line strainer is letter "C" in the picture below. The RP4004 Water Line Strainer fits many Aprilaire humidifier models. Some of the Aprilaire humidifier models that the 4004 fits are: 550, 400, 600, 700, 760, 760A, 768, 440, 350, 112, & 110. In fact I do not see any of the Aprilaire humidifiers that it doesn't fit! Below is an picture with an opportunity for you to purchase. Thank You! We would appreciate you business!

Aprilaire #4655 Humidistat
Our next humidistat is the Aprilaire Model #4655. This is the new analog manual humidistat that takes the place of the 4016 humidistat. This manual humidistat comes with many of the manual Aprilaire humidifiers. This humidistat comes with mounting screws, installation instructions and operating instructions.

Self Tapping Water Saddle Valve
*If you loosen the compression nut that goes into your water solenoid valve and no water comes out then there is a good possibility that you need a new saddle valve. The saddle valve has become stopped up with lime deposits or debris. Please make sure your main water supply is turned off in your home, and the pressure is relieved from the pipes by opening a faucet or two before you attempt to remove the saddle valve. You will get an unexpected shower and a mess if you don't turn off the main water supply and relieve the pressure. Below is a picture of one of my favorite saddle valves with an opportunity for you to purchase. I especially like it because it is already screwed into the base and ready to go! No pipe dope needed to keep it from leaking!

Aprilaire Humidifier Transformer Part #4010

Aprilaire Scale Control Insert Part #4236
This is the u-shaped component which surrounds the Water Panel Evaporator. Below we have a picture with an opportunity for you to purchase.
The insert is for use with Aprilaire models: 560, 560A, 568, 700, 760, 760A & 768

Aprilaire Water Distribution Tray Part #4246

Humidifier Installation Accessories:
Below are listed some of the accessories and supplies you might need when installing your humidifier. If your furnace has a humidifier (HUM) terminal on the control board then you will not need the A50 current sensing relay.
Please click here if you have other humidifier installation questions. This will take you to our frequently asked questions page. You can call Aprilaire Customer Support at: 1-800-334-6011 for technical support and other questions.
One accessory that I use on many of my humidifier installations is a Current Sensing Relay. This nifty little relay allows me to quickly set up the humidifier to run only when the furnace blower is running. This eliminates the need for a sail switch or more complex wiring. The relay attaches around the white (most of the time) common lead of your furnace blower motor. When the blower comes on it senses there is current and turns your humidifier on. It is easy to install and comes with complete wiring directions and instructions. The
Aprilaire A50 current sensing relay acts like a 24 volt switch. The
Aprilaire A50 is not designed for 110 volts. You would need the A51 current sensing relay if you plan on running 110 volts through the relay.
We do not sell the A51 current sensing relay. The Aprilaire A50 relay is made
by Aprilaire, Research products.
