Gas Furnace Parts with troubleshooting Section
Please click here to see our Furnace Ignitors page if you would like to purchase an extra furnace ignitor. Furnace ignitor failure is a common problem that I see every year in my HVAC business. Troubleshooting for furnace ignitors are included on our Furnace Ignitors page. Thank You!
Please click here to see our Furnace Flame Sensors Page. Furnace flame sensor failure is a common problem that I see every year in my HVAC business. Most of the time you can clean the flame sensor with light sand paper, steel wool or emery cloth. Reinstall the flame sensor, and you are as good as new. I have seen a few flame sensors go completely out where you have to replace them to get the furnace back in operation. Troubleshooting flame sensors are included on our Furnace Flame Sensors Page.
Below is a picture to help you identify what a flame sensor looks like. Below is a picture of three different types of flame sensors:
*Always turn the power off to the furnace and shut your gas off before working on your furnace. Failure to do so could cause personal injury and/or property damage.
Problem: Pilot will not stay lit or main gas will not come on.
Symptom #1: You have tried to relight your pilot several times and it will not stay lit. You then proceed to install a new thermocouple. After installing the new thermocouple you try to relight the pilot and it still will not stay lit. You probably need a new gas valve.
Symptom #2: Your pilot is lit, but when you turn your thermostat up the main gas valve will not open and the main burners will not ignite to produce heat. You checked the wiring to make sure there are not any loose connections. You flipped the levers and switches on the thermostat to make sure they are all engaged in the "Heat" position. If you have a multimeter you test the two wires going into the main gas valve and you find that you are getting 24 volts to the gas valve. You need a gas valve.
*Do this step if you do not have a multimeter and you feel comfortable with working on your thermostat and electric thermostat wiring. In this step we are trying to eliminate the possibility of the thermostat being at fault by, bypassing the thermostat to see if the main gas valve will come on. If you do not have a multimeter tester you can turn all the power off to your system. Take the cover off your thermostat and proceed until you get to the thermostat wiring terminals. There should be 4 wires, "R"=red, W=white, G=Green and yellow or blue on the "Y" terminal. Take the wire off the "R" terminal and then take the wire off the "W" terminal and tie the two wires together. I usually take some electrical pliers and twist the two wires together. Turn your power back on to the furnace. If the furnace main burners light the fault is in your thermostat. I

*Tip: Some contractors have told me that many of the SmartValves are having problems with the 4 wire connector that plugs into the top of the valve. If you can hold the 4 wire connector in the right place many times the valve will work. Some contractors have told me you can use a match stick to hold the 4 wire connector in the right place so the valve will work.

MA-Line 1/4" Aluminum Pilot Repair Tubing
Need to repair your leaking pilot tube. Below is pictured a great little kit for repair. This kit includes 5' of 1/4" aluminum pilot tubing with compression fittings for only $10.00.

Honeywell Universal Thermocouple
The main reason why older gas furnaces (pre 1992) and water heaters go out is the thermocouple. The thermocouple senses the flame of the pilot. If the thermocouple goes bad it senses there is no flame and it shuts off the gas supply to the pilot, and the gas supply to the main gas valve. Thank goodness! This is a great safety feature, because of course you would not want the gas coming out of the pilot or main burners if there was not a flame! We offer to you the most reliable thermocouple that I have found in my 22 years in the HVAC business. It is universal and adapts to almost any existing pilot setup. Hardware for adaptation is included. Below is a picture and an opportunity to purchase for only $8.00 each. Please click on the "Add to Cart" button to purchase through a secure server. Thank You!
Key Tite Gas Pipe Joint Compound
A Note of Concern: *When working with gas, of course you never want a leak! Test for gas leaks with soap bubbles. If you smell gas do not turn on anything or even use the telephone. The least little spark could cause an explosion. Leave the premises and call your local gas company or fire department.
I wanted to make available to you one of the best gas pipe joint compounds on the market today. Key Tite! I have been using it for years with great results. This is the same pipe joint compound that our gas department here in Louisville, KY. uses. You would use this on the threads of the gas pipe before you join them together. When using this and other compounds on threads that are being joined into gas valves always stay back away from the very end of the threads about an 1/8" so you do not get the compound up inside the valve. This could stop the valve up if this happens. Below I have a picture with an opportunity for you to purchase. This cleans up with mineral spirits or paint thinner.
