Need Help Troubleshooting Your Heating
& Air Conditioning Problems?

Amana
Ignitors & Furnace Troubleshooting Section:
Problem:
Your furnace will not ignite the gas to produce heat for your home. When a
furnace has a bad ignitor what I see most of the time is the following sequence
of operation:
1.
Thermostat calls for heat.
2.
Draft inducer motor starts.
3.
Pressure switch attached by a small plastic or rubber tube senses the negative
pressure
produced by the draft inducer and closes.
4.
Draft inducer runs for 30 seconds to a minute before you hear a gas hissing
sound. The
ignitor did not glow, the flame sensor (a small metal probe about
1/8" in diameter, with a
white porcelain base) does not sense the flame, so
after 8 to 10 seconds the hissing sounds
stops with no ignition of gas to heat
your home. Your furnace shuts down and goes into a
lock out condition until you
turn your power switch back off and on again.
Solution:
You probably need to purchase and install a new ignitor.
Below
we have pictures of Ignitors that many Amana furnaces have installed in them,
with an opportunity for you to purchase. I am glad we have the opportunity to do
business with you! The Internet is awesome!
Below
is a scanned picture of various Ignitor Ceramic Block Styles & Terminal
Block Styles.

Goodman, Amana Furnace Hot Surface
Ignitor Part #20165703S
This Goodman, Amana ignitor replaces part numbers: #20165703S,
#20165703
201657-03, Model 601. This ignitor is made specifically for Goodman GMS & GKS
furnaces. This ignitor replaces the ignitor in the Mini Igniter conversion kit
Part #0230K00001 that we sell above.
Below we have a picture of the ignitor
with an opportunity for you to purchase.

*For Your Information: When handling &
installing ignitors never touch the gray glass part of the ignitor. Handle &
install the ignitor using the white porcelain part of the ignitor. If you touch
the gray glass, it could shorten the life of the ignitor. Ignitors are very
fragile. If you drop it or hit it against something the ignitor will easily
break. Please be careful.

Furnace Flame Sensor
Section:
First, for those of you who might not know, "What
is a flame sensor?" A flame sensor is a safety device. When your
furnace's main burners ignite (light Up) the flame sensor picks up the heat from
the furnace's main burning and says, "YES," and sends a signal
back to the main furnace control board saying that it is OK to let the main
burner stay on. Or if the main burners do not ignite, the flame sensor
does not pick up the heat and says, "NO" to the main control board,
Shut That Gas Valve and Main Burners Down! Thank God we have safety controls
like the flame sensor. Most of the time, after
turning your furnace's power off, you may clean the flame sensors with
light sand cloth, emery cloth or steel wool. Reinstall the flame sensor and you
are back in business! Over the years flame sensors can build up a light coating
of burned-in dust and dirt. This insulates the flame sensor so that it doesn't
sense the heat of the flame well enough, so by cleaning it you have almost
restored it to its new condition. Seldom, but sometimes they do go out
completely. Below we have various Amana flame sensors with an
opportunity for you to purchase. It might be worth having a spare on hand.

Please
Remember Safety First
Please
read our disclaimer and safety related information below before attempting to do any
type of Heating
or Air Conditioning Repair. We do not want to see anyone get hurt or
shocked!
Thank You!
*Please always turn off all electrical
power, and discharge the capacitor/capacitors (if working around capacitors) before attempting to inspect or repair any heating & air conditioning
equipment. Check to make sure the electrical power is off with a reliable meter. I have never
been shocked by a capacitor (knock on wood) and rarely see them discharge, but
it is a good idea to discharge them before working around them. Please read
below. It tells you how to discharge a capacitor.

Please read the following:
How To Discharge The High Voltage
Capacitor: The capacitor is discharged
by creating a short circuit (direct connection) between the two capacitor
terminals and from each terminal to chassis ground (bare metal surface).
Please make sure that you are touching the insulated screw driver handle and not
the metal part of the screw driver before attempting this procedure.
-
Do this by touching the blade of an insulated-handled screw driver to
one terminal, then slide it toward the other terminal until it makes contact
and hold it there for a few seconds. ( Sometimes
this can result in a rather
"pop!")
Repeat the procedure to create a short between each capacitor terminal and
chassis ground.
If the capacitor has three terminals, use the same procedure to create a
short circuit between each terminal and then from each terminal to ground.
